Special Issue Introduction

The intricate interplay between microorganisms and pharmacotherapy is an emerging frontier in biomedical science, offering profound implications for drug efficacy, safety, and individualized medicine. This Special Issue, "Microbial Impact on Pharmacotherapy and Toxicology: Exploring Drug-Microbiota Interactions," delves into the dynamic interactions between the human microbiota and pharmaceutical agents. It highlights how microbial communities influence drug metabolism, therapeutic outcomes, and toxicological profiles, with a particular focus on drug-microbiota interactions.

The human microbiome has gained recognition as a modulator of health and disease. Its role in drug response and adverse reactions has become an area of intense research interest. This issue aims to bridge the gap between microbiology and pharmacology, presenting cutting-edge research, comprehensive reviews, and insightful perspectives on how the microbiota modifies pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. By examining microbial contributions to drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME), we uncover the underlying mechanisms that govern drug-microbiota interactions and their clinical implications.

This Special Issue spans a broad spectrum of topics, including the influence of gut microbiota on drug bioavailability, microbial biotransformation of pharmaceuticals, the effects of antibiotics and probiotics on drug efficacy, pharmacotherapy, and the role of microbial dysbiosis in drug toxicity. Furthermore, we highlight how understanding these interactions is becoming an emerging priority for precision medicine, aiming to tailor pharmacotherapy to the unique microbiological landscape of each individual.

By integrating findings from genomics, metabolomics, and systems biology, we aim to offer a holistic understanding of the bidirectional relationship between drugs and the microbiome. Through this Special Issue, we aspire to catalyze further research and foster a multidisciplinary dialogue that will enhance our ability to predict drug responses, mitigate adverse effects, and tailor pharmacotherapy. By exploring these complex interactions, we hope to pave the way for innovative therapeutic strategies that harness the power of the microbiota to optimize drug efficacy and safety, ultimately advancing the field of precision medicine.

This Special Issue invites submissions of comprehensive research articles, reviews, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and perspectives on the following and related topics:

● Antibiotics and probiotics on pharmacotherapy;

● Microbiota-mediated drug toxicity;

● Microbial contributions to the development of drug resistance;

● The role of microbiota in drug absorption and bioavailability;

● Microbial modulation of drug metabolism;

● Microbial influence on immune modulation and immunotherapy;

● Nutritional modulation of drug microbiota interactions;

    etc.
