Special Topic Introduction

Diet is one of the most influential and modifiable factors shaping the gut microbiome, which plays a central role in regulating host metabolism and overall health. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that diet–microbiome interactions are intricately linked to the onset and progression of metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Understanding how dietary components influence microbial composition, function, and metabolite production—and how these, in turn, affect host metabolic pathways—has become a critical frontier in microbiome research. This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge studies and expert perspectives that elucidate the mechanistic basis of diet–microbiome–host interactions, while also highlighting emerging strategies such as multi-omics integration, microbiome-targeted interventions, and precision nutrition. By bridging fundamental discoveries with clinical and translational applications, this issue seeks to advance the development of personalized dietary approaches for improving metabolic health and preventing disease.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

● Diet–microbiome interactions and metabolic regulation;

● Gut microbiota in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome;

● Microbial metabolites (e.g., short-chain fatty acids, bile acids) and host signaling;

● Host–microbiome crosstalk and immune–metabolic pathways;

● Dietary patterns and eating behaviors and their microbiome-mediated metabolic effects;

● Dietary patterns, nutrients, and microbial ecology;

● Multi-omics approaches in microbiome research;

● Single-cell, spatial, and organoid-based approaches for dissecting diet–microbiome–host interactions;

● Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital biomarkers for predicting dietary response and metabolic outcomes;

● Microbiome-based interventions (prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics);

● Precision nutrition and personalized dietary strategies.
