Special Topic Introduction

Functional optoelectronic crystal materials play a central role in modern photonic and electronic technologies, enabling applications in light emission, detection, modulation, energy conversion, and information processing. Their remarkable physical properties arise from well-defined crystal structures, long-range order, and rich structural chemistry, which govern electronic band structures, polarization behavior, and light–matter interactions. In particular, the performance of these materials is highly sensitive to microstructural features such as defects, domain configurations, phase boundaries, and interfaces, which provide powerful pathways for tuning functional responses.

This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in structural chemistry and microstructure design of functional optoelectronic crystals. We welcome contributions focusing on crystal structure design, defect engineering, domain and interface control, phase transitions, and compositional regulation, as well as their impact on optical and electronic properties. Studies involving crystal growth strategies, in situ/operando characterization, theoretical calculations, and computational modeling are also encouraged to provide deeper insights into structure–property relationships at multiple length scales.

By bringing together interdisciplinary research in chemistry, physics, materials science, and device engineering, this Special Issue seeks to promote a deeper understanding of how structural chemistry and microstructure jointly determine the performance of optoelectronic crystals. Contributions spanning bulk crystals, thin films, heterostructures, and low-dimensional systems are particularly welcome, especially those demonstrating clear connections between structural design, microstructural evolution, and device functionality.
