Special Issue Introduction

Surgery has undergone a profound transformation in recent decades, rapidly evolving into a high-tech discipline. Increasingly technological advancements, such as modern operating rooms (OR) featuring digital and interconnected equipment and novel imaging, along with robotic procedures, hold immense potential to significantly improve patient therapy and surgical outcomes. The synergy between surgery and artificial intelligence offers unprecedented opportunities. Playing a pivotal role within the realm of artificial intelligence, the application of high-speed, precise data processing and data analysis is gaining ground in the field of surgery. At its core, surgical data science stands as a critical discipline dedicated to enhancing the quality, safety, and value of interventional healthcare through data acquisition, organization, analysis, and modeling.

This Special Issue on “Surgical Data Science- The Art of Data” aims to explore topics including but not limited to:

1. Future of the surgical data science;

2. Surgical data science for surgical education;

3. Geometric understanding and image registration;

4. Prediction modeling and decision making in surgery;

5. Data in laparoscopic/endoscopic/robotic surgery;

6. 3D modeling in surgery;

7. Machine consciousness and navigation in minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery;

8. Digital operating room: the position of video technology in surgery;

9. Surgical decision support;

10. Operating room and surgical workflow analysis;

11. Machine learning methods for postoperative outcomes prediction;

12. Surgical Data Science for Safe cholecystectomy;

13. Big data-driven optimization of surgical protocol;

14. Ethical considerations in surgical data science.
