Special Issue Introduction

The pervasive presence of antibiotics in aquatic environments has become a critical issue, impacting the health of both aquatic ecosystems and humans. This Special Issue delves into the current status of antibiotic contamination, exploring its sources, pathways, and ecological ramifications in water bodies. It features cutting-edge research on the prevalence, distribution, and environmental impact of antibiotics, alongside discussions on the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Additionally, the issue addresses advancements in wastewater treatment technologies, including the innovative use of enzymatic degradation to break down antibiotic compounds. It also highlights the regulatory challenges in curbing antibiotic discharge and underscores the need for new strategies, such as enzymatic processes, to mitigate antibiotic pollution. From a forward-looking perspective, this issue calls for interdisciplinary action, policy reforms, and greater public engagement to safeguard aquatic ecosystems and public health.
