Special Issue Introduction

In recent years, rapid industrialization and urbanization have resulted in a substantial increase in the generation of various pollutants, posing significant threats to our water bodies and the environment. Traditional wastewater treatment methods have been successful in removing conventional pollutants; however, emerging contaminants, heavy metals, and nutrient-rich compounds continue to challenge existing treatment practices. Therefore, there is an urgent need for innovative and sustainable approaches to address these environmental challenges. Microalgae-based removal of pollutants from wastewater has emerged as a promising and eco-friendly technology that holds great potential for mitigating water pollution.

This Special Issue aims to contribute to the development of sustainable and efficient wastewater treatment strategies, topics include but not limited to:

1. Delving into the specific mechanisms by which microalgae remove pollutants from wastewater;

2. Exploring the integration of microalgae-based systems with conventional wastewater treatment processes, such as activated sludge systems, to improve overall treatment efficiency and reduce pollutant levels;

3. Exploring the ability of microalgae to remove nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, from wastewater through biological uptake, thus reducing the risk of eutrophication in receiving water bodies;

4. Addressing the challenges and opportunities associated with scaling up microalgae-based wastewater treatment technologies from laboratory to pilot and full-scale applications;

5. Efficiency, mechanism and influencing factors of biodegradation of novel pollutants by microalgae.

6. Response mechanism of different concentrations of microalgae to pollutants in wastewater;

7. Mechanism of toxic interaction of nanoplastics on microalgae;

8. Effect of wastewater from mariculture on removal of pollutants by microalgae;

9. Biochar degradation of pollutants in wastewater by microalgae production;

10. Treatment mechanism of wastewater by microalgal biofilm system;

11. Research progress of wastewater treatment by microalgae and challenges to be faced in the future.
