Special Issue Introduction
Hand surgery has witnessed transformative advancements over the past decade, and artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a cornerstone of this progress. With its ability to analyze vast datasets, predict surgical outcomes, and enhance precision in operative planning, AI is reshaping how clinicians approach hand reconstruction's complexities. From optimizing preoperative imaging and guiding intraoperative decision making to refining rehabilitation protocols, AI provides novel solutions to long-standing challenges such as functional restoration, aesthetic outcomes, and patient-specific care. This Special Issue, Artificial Intelligence-Driven New Clinical Progress in Hand Surgery, aims to bring together leading researchers, surgeons, and technologists to explore cutting-edge AI applications in the field. Topics of interest include but are not limited to, machine learning models for predicting surgical outcomes in hand reconstruction surgery, AI-assisted diagnostics in assessing hand function and injury severity, the role of digital twins in personalized care for hand surgery patients, and the integration of robotics and automation in hand reconstructive procedures. Contributions focusing on patient-reported outcomes, ethical considerations, and the challenges of implementing AI in clinical practice for hand surgery are also encouraged.
