Special Issue Introduction

Bile acids are central in regulating digestive processes, lipid metabolism, and systemic energy balance. Beyond their traditional functions in emulsifying dietary fats and aiding nutrient absorption, recent research has uncovered a complex and dynamic interaction between bile acid metabolism and the intestinal microbiota. This intricate relationship is essential for maintaining metabolic homeostasis and influences various physiological and pathological conditions.

The gut microbiota, a diverse community of microorganisms inhabiting the intestines, significantly modulates bile acid composition and metabolism. Through microbial activity, bile acid synthesis, biotransformations, and recycling are altered, creating a feedback loop that profoundly impacts host health. Disruptions in this delicate balance have been associated with various pathophysiological conditions, including metabolic disorders, cholestatic liver diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, and gastrointestinal dysfunction.

This Special Issue brings together cutting-edge research that explores the interplay between bile acid metabolism and the intestinal microbiota. Through a collection of original research articles, reviews, and perspectives, we delve into the mechanisms by which the gut microbiome regulates the bile acid pool composition and, in turn, affects overall health and disease progression. Key topics include:

● The role of bile acids as signaling molecules in microbiota-host interactions;

● Mechanistic insights into how microbiota-derived bile acid modifications influence host metabolism;

● The impact of gut dysbiosis on bile acid metabolism and its health implications;
