Special Issue Introduction

Recent reviews have highlighted the crucial role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in paracrine communication during various reproductive processes, including oogenesis, oocyte maturation, fertilization, embryo-maternal crosstalk in the oviduct, and embryo implantation. For example, follicular EVs secreted by granulosa cells promote oocyte maturation and increase the expression of key genes. Additionally, EVs from male reproductive tracts contribute to a complex pool of EVs that assist in sperm maturation and influence the physiology of female reproductive tract cells, thereby supporting reproductive success. Successful pregnancy requires a molecular dialogue between the embryo and the female reproductive tract, which begins in the oviduct and continues until placenta formation. During embryo migration from the oviduct to the uterus, the embryo undergoes distinct metabolic stages (cleavage, morula, blastula, gastrula), with the oviduct positively impacting embryo development and quality. Furthermore, EVs from embryo can regulate embryo development and implantation. This Special Issue aims to collect original research articles, reviews, short papers, mini reviews, communications, and perspectives on all aspects of reproductive biology in light of new insights into paracrine communication mechanisms through EVs. It will also consider the morphological and molecular responses of gametes and preimplantation embryos to environmental stressors that might contribute to adverse reproductive outcomes.
