Special Issue Introduction

Advanced building materials, such as high-performance concrete, fiber-reinforced composites, and smart materials, provide enhanced performance, durability, and sustainability, meeting the demands of modern construction for enhanced seismic resilience and reduced environmental impact. This Special Issue explores cutting-edge materials and innovative design strategies that enhance the resilience of buildings against seismic events. It also examines seismic design methodologies, retrofitting techniques, and disaster prevention strategies aimed at minimizing damage and ensuring the safety of structures. This collection of articles provides valuable insights for engineers, architects, and researchers focused on sustainable and resilient building practices.

The scope of this issue covers, but is not restricted to:

• Advanced building materials;

• Response, analysis and design of structures under seismic conditions;

• Experimental and computational simulation of seismic effects on structures;

• Seismic vulnerability assessment;

• Development of seismic code guidelines and evaluation;

• Methods for earthquake-resistant design;

• Repair and strengthening of structures;

• Passive and active systems for earthquake protection;

• Damage assessments;

• Seismic risk assessment of structures including multi-hazards (earthquakes and other hazards such as wind, tsunami, storm surge, fire, blast, impact, etc.);

• Performance-based seismic design considering damage minimization, repairability, functional recovery, etc.;

• Earthquake disaster mitigation and emergency planning.

Keywords

Advanced materials, seismic design, seismic vulnerability assessment, seismic risk assessment, performance-based seismic design, seismic design codes
