Special Issue Introduction

Seismic risk and resilience analyses at the urban scale provide essential information for public authorities and policymakers (e.g., for planning earthquake disaster response and mitigation actions, the development of urban planning and land use management). These analyses also benefit insurance and real-estate industries and structural engineers. This Special Issue welcomes articles on the latest research and cutting-edge technological advancements, including the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, to enhance the assessment and management of risk and resilience in urban systems. In this context, urban systems encompass both the built environment and all related, interacting infrastructures. Socio-economic aspects may also be considered, given their significant role in risk and resilience assessment.

Potential topics covered in this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:

● Systemic risk assessment of urban systems;

● Ground motion and site amplification modeling at large scales;

● Spatial variability of ground motion;

● City effects on ground motion;

● Soil-Foundation-Structure interaction for different aboveground and underground systems at the urban scale;

● Consideration of aging effects;

● Best practices for strengthening and upgrading structures and infrastructures at the urban scale;

● Artificial intelligence-aided urban risk and resilience assessment;

● Rapid loss and resilience quantification;

● Resilience assessment and management at the urban scale;

● Life-cycle risk and resilience evaluation;

● Multi-hazards and cascading effects.

Keywords

Seismic risk, urban environment, infrastructures and utilities, systemic approach, resilience, vulnerability and losses, spatial variability of ground motion, site effects, SFSI and city effects, socio-economic impact, AI, life-cycle
