Special Issue Introduction

Urban tunnels and pipelines are critical infrastructures, serving as vital lifelines for urban transportation, energy supply, flood prevention, and communication. They play a crucial role in addressing the challenges of high-density urban living and are essential for achieving sustainable urban development. Currently, urban tunnels and pipelines are transitioning into a phase where incremental construction and quality improvement of existing infrastructure are equally important.

Given the complexities of urban underground environments, long spans of structures, and lag in digitization, managing the entire lifespan of urban tunnels and pipelines presents numerous challenges. However, with the advancement of key information technologies, such as advanced sensing, big data, and artificial intelligence, advanced construction methods can enable the integrated and efficient collaboration of design, construction, and operational services.

This Special Issue aims to showcase recent research progress related to the smart construction and operation of the urban tunnels and pipelines. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

● Intelligent perception and data fusion of urban tunnels and pipelines;

● Intelligent construction and assembly construction of urban tunnels and pipelines;

● Three-dimensional modeling, digital twinning and performance deduction of urban tunnels and pipelines;

● Toughness improvement of service performance of urban tunnels and pipelines;

● Intelligent operation and maintenance of urban tunnels and pipelines.
