Special Issue Introduction

Supercapacitors, also known as electrochemical capacitors, include electrochemical double-layer capacitors, which rely on ion adsorption, and pseudo-capacitors, which are based on fast redox reactions. Although the energy densities of supercapacitors are much lower than those of secondary batteries, they are several orders of magnitude higher than those of conventional dielectric capacitors. Supercapacitors typically exhibit high power density, long cyclic stability, enhanced safety, and a broad operational temperature range. Consequently, they are a viable alternative or complement to rechargeable batteries in applications that require high power delivery or fast energy harvesting. In recent years, hybrid ion (super)capacitors have been developed using ions such as Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Zn2+, NH4+, etc., to extend the energy density of traditional supercapacitors. Various nanomaterials, including porous carbon materials, conducting polymers, and traditional metal compounds, have been developed for capacitive energy storage devices through advanced nanotechnologies such as solvothermal reactions, electrospinning, chemical vapor deposition, electrodeposition, etc. This Special Issue aims to provide an overview of recent advances and future prospects in the field of supercapacitors and hybrid ion capacitors. We invite submissions of original research articles, perspectives, and reviews, encouraging authors to contribute their latest experimental and theoretical work.
