Special Issue Introduction
Molecular magnetism, an interdisciplinary and intensively developed area combining physics, materials and chemistry, has seen amazing advances in the chemical design of novel magnetic molecules and materials in recent years, with unprecedented control over their magnetic properties, even at the single-molecule level. As a relatively new class of purely organic or metallo-organic materials that show magnetism even without an external magnetic field, molecular magnets have raised increasing interest in their design, synthesis, characterization, unique properties and applications. Especially, molecular magnetic materials have entered a new area after recent discoveries of room temperature spin crossover applications (e.g., in civil security, magnetic refrigerant, nanomechanics, etc.) or room temperature molecular based magnets, not so say about photomagnets and photochromic switchable magnetic materials.
The recent evolution of molecular magnetism towards nanomagnetism and nanomaterials, with an increasing focus on applications, has been triggered by a general evolution of materials science towards nanoscience and nanotechnology. However, most current research is still focused on basic science. This Special Issue shall cover recent advances in the field with a focus on synthesis, characterization, properties and future applications.
Specific areas to be covered include, but are not limited to:
● Synthesis and characterization of molecular magnetic materials
● Single-molecule magnets
● Porous molecular magnets
● Conductive molecular magnets
● 2D magnetic materials
● Spin crossover applications
● Molecular spins in quantum technologies
● Molecular photomagnets
● Photochromic switchable magnetic materials
● Selective chemosensors
