Special Topic Introduction
Due to its importance in synthetic organic chemistry and its applications, organophosphorus chemistry remains a focused field also these days. Tetravalent phosphine oxides, phosphinic-, phosphonic- and phosphoric derivatives along with trivalent phosphines-, phosphinous-, phosphonous- and phosphorous derivatives may be starting materials, intermediates in a wide variety of syntheses. The target compounds – among others - may be reagents, catalysts, P-ligands and bioactive species for utilization in the pharmaceutical- and the plant protecting agent industry. The importance of P-compounds in medicinal chemistry is increasing. Without being complete, famous named reactions, like the Arbuzov reaction, the Wittig reaction, the Wadsworth-Emmons (Wittig-Horner) reaction, the Pudovik reaction, the Kabachnik-Fields (phospha-Mannich) reaction and the Mitsunobu reaction are frequent model reactions emerging in this field. The application of P-compounds as catalysts (phase transfer- or organocatalysts), ligands in transition metal complexes or as ionic liquids is also noteworthy. A recent trend is to find hydroxy- and aminophosphonates with cytostatic effect. P-compounds may play an important role in the field of plastics, material science and as extracting agensts for metal ions. The preparation of optically active P-compounds by stereoselective syntheses or by optical resolution is also a challenge. The green aspects meaning solid phase-, sonochemical- and MW syntheses, as well as flow accomplishments and theoretical approaches on the reactivity of P-compounds and to explore mechanisms are also of interest.
