Special Topic Introduction

In recent years, transportation systems have been evolving rapidly. Technological developments in vehicles, infrastructure, and traffic control centers - such as vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and vehicle-to-everything communication technologies - have significantly contributed to safer and smoother traffic operations. However, as transportation systems are expected to meet increasingly stringent performance, safety, and sustainability requirements, it has become essential to explore next-generation intelligent transportation systems and more sustainable modes of mobility. These emerging systems increasingly rely on cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), edge intelligence, sixth-generation (6G) communication technologies, and shared mobility, to enable connected, cooperative, and automated mobility (CCAM).

This Special Issue aims to collect cutting-edge advancements in intelligent transportation systems at the intersection of automatic control, information communication technology, and AI. It focuses on critical challenges facing future transportation systems, such as the integration of human-driven and automated traffic, the deployment of AI-enabled traffic management systems, the incorporation of urban air mobility into existing road transportation networks, and the coordination and synergy of multimodal transportation systems.

By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, this Special Issue seeks to advance next-generation intelligent transportation solutions that push the frontiers of future mobility. We welcome high-quality contributions from researchers in control science, transportation science, AI, communications, robotics, and other relevant disciplines.

Topics of Interest:

● AI-driven autonomous driving and AI-enabled traffic management;

● Traffic management based on coordinated human-vehicle-infrastructure systems;

● Vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and vehicle-to-everything communication technologies;

● Edge intelligence and cloud intelligence for intelligent transportation systems;

● Mixed traffic (human-driven and automated vehicles) modeling and control;

● Integration of urban air mobility (or the low-altitude economy) with road transportation systems;

● Sustainable transportation solutions;

● Autonomous driving systemstacks (from perception and localization to path planning and decision making).

We invite academics, researchers, graduate students, and industry professionals to submit their original work.
